Twitter: Why Can’t People I Don’t Follow DM Me?

Yeah, I get that it’s nominally an anti-spam thing. That makes sense. But why not a setting so I can choose? How about a rule: if I DM someone, they can DM me?

As of this writing, I follow 81 people on Twitter. That’s roughly 30% of the people I consider Worth Reading. The trouble is, I pride myself on actually reading every single post by every single person I follow. If I followed everyone Worthwhile, I wouldn’t be able to keep up.

But none of this means I’m not interested in “connecting” with anyone who wants to address me directly. Just because I don’t give a shit what your favorite sandwich meat is, that doesn’t mean I don’t want you to send me flowers or argue with something I’ve asserted.
